The 5 Romeo and Juliet adaptations you HAVE to see

We’re sure that each and every single one of you has heard of the eponymous play about the star-crossed lovers whose names rhyme with beau and brunette. And if the title wasn’t already a straight giveaway, let’s dive into ( some of ) the many adaptations of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet!

Romeo + Juliet (1996) : A movie for the pop culture fanatics !

In 1996 year of the rat, Oprah Winfrey launched her book club, the spice girls unleashed their debut album and Director Baz Luhrmann released his second movie, turned cult classic : “Romeo+Juliet” starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes.

At first glance, this contemporary adaptation may look like an ironic retelling of the famous tale with its unruly setting, unique fashion sense , and use of olden tongue. However, throughout its two-hour run, the movie unfolds into this beautiful homage to love and 90’s covers of iconic rock and pop songs. Displaying religious iconography along with a fever-dream aesthetic that redefined Shakespeare for the MTV generation.

This is a perfect watch for neurodivergent minds, cinephiles or anyone who’s trying to distract themselves with the vibrant, artful and colorful chaos of 90’s cinema.

Romeo and Juliet (1968) : THE Textbook adaptation!

Now, if you’re looking for the most faithful adaptation there is (possibly to avoid reading/watching the play) , look no further! For thou hast discovered the pin within the mountain of fodder.

Franco Zeffirelli’s R&J starring Olivia Hussey and Leonard Whiting ( actual teenagers at the time!) is THE Bible in terms of historical re-creation.

While the director took the liberty to dismiss nearly half the original text, he made sure to replace the verbal imagery with strikingly accurate visual storytelling that perfectly embodies the Renaissance era, making it the intricate and praised work it is today!

It’s a watch made in heaven for LLCE students or anyone classically attuned and curious about that particular era!

Gnomeo and Juliet ( 2011 ) : A family friendly treat!

Garden gnomes. Senseless war. Mower races.

Are the three ideal terms to describe this comedic adaptation of the “oh-so-tragic” tale!

In his work, “Gnomeo and Juliet” director Kelly Asbury knew how to capture younger audiences with its vibrant and distinct color code and Spoofy and Slapstick humour!

Now, don’t go thinking the contrary because this adaptation isn’t at all “dumbed-down” it is in fact witty, intriguing and possesses an emotional core that could melt the iciest of hearts.

It’s a camp blend of Shakespearean drama and backyard feud making it the ideal watch for family nights !

Which! Speaking of camp, have you ever heard of

Pizza My heart ( 2005 ) : A feel-good watch for your next night in!

, well it was love at first slice! And If you love the original Romeo and Juliet narrative but wouldn’t mind a rather predictable subplot, here’s your chance !

Andy Wolk perfectly adapted Shakespeare’s masterpiece to the Disney Channel/Hallmark generation with cheesy dialogue ( excuse the pun 😉 ), a nostalgic teenage romance soundtrack, and saucy moments that’ll have you wondering if the lovers get caught by their rival pizza-making families and if the plot will eventually catch up to them.

One review even cites that “its perfect for its venue” not meant to be grandiose but rather lightheartedly enjoyed!

It’s just the watch for a cozy Saturday evening in, and it even suggests the best snack for the occasion… And oh boy! Wouldn’t you like to know who serves the best pizza!

But not now, for comes the time to discuss the most recent adaptation on this list,

West Side Story (2021) : A love letter to theatre kids!

And if I might spoil, just a little :

One less dead. No less tragic.

Recently re-adapted by Steven Spielberg, starring Rachel Zegler and Ansel Elgort, “West Side Story” is a colorful, harmonious, and frankly woke talk about gentrification, racial division, and women’s assigned “roles” in society. It is a very contemporary take on the R&J classic and a beautiful rendition of the 1957 Broadway musical.

It perfectly embodies how relevant this centuries-old conflict remains today, with a set of amazing singers, a show of breathtaking choreography, and a powerhouse of a cast that brought life to words on paper!

Don’t hesitate to check all of these out and to tell us all about them in the comments below!!
